What’s the Direction of this Church?
What’s the direction of this church? It’s a fair question. At one level it is dependent upon your direction in life. At another level, it is dependent on the servant leadership of this church and the Holy Spirit in us.
My friend John preached for years. He still does as an interim–fill in preacher. We had a long, overdue lunch last week. In the past year or so he has preached in 21 congregations, mostly in the DFW area. John is a bright, caring and Christ centered man.
I asked him, “John, what are you learning?”
Read slowly and thoughtfully.
- A lack of focus, vitality: “It’s bleak in outlook in a majority of congregations.”
- Negligent in hospitality: “Few, if any very welcoming; too much about us.”
- Magic formula thinking: “Everyone is looking for the program or method that will turn them around or create great growth.”
And then John said, “There is no magic formula. A growing and healthy church is work. It’s about doing the basics well: hospitality, intentionality, focus on Christ, following up with people, being consistent, growing spiritually.”
- What about us?
- Do we have a culture of vitality, focus, hospitality and work?
- What is God up to around here and in your life?
